Beneath the Scars series

Good morning,
I have a cold that is trying to kick my butt right now, but considering all the other germs going on right now at work I'll take the cold. I'm finishing up the edits on Define a Hero (Beneath the Scars 3) to send to the editor today! Which is a tad earlier than I was thinking, but I'll take it! There is a huge gap between the first and second, we will call it a trade off? I hope that everyone is enjoying the second one! It is now available for everyone whether you like paperbacks or ebooks.

I loved the first one so much I wanted to go back to that world. I originally started to write a sequel to Beneath the Scars. Jack had a different name, and he was a cop. Faye's character has gone through a few different names, until I came up with Faye Harper and it just clicked. After putting that story on the back burner. Then after a few years, the characters that would become Faye and Jack came to life. About halfway through with writing the story I heard the song 'Greatest Love Story' by Lanco came out, and it made me think of the characters.

Call for Help
Beneath the Scars 2
Jack Corrente was once part of the same unit as Riley Nolan. Now after serving Jack is back in his hometown. On the outside he is working at the same mechanic shop he worked at in high school, he went out with his friends, and helped his mom around the house. On the inside though he is battling the shadows from the past.

One night though his high school sweetheart, Faye Harper, accidentally calls him. His mind becomes swampier with all the other memories. Faye was ready to escape the small town as soon as she saw her chance. She is states away in New York City. She has a job she likes and a fast pace life. However, ever since that phone call she wonders if she made the right decisions in her life.

Keep your eyes open, but it looks like the conclusion of this trilogy will be out in the beginning of 2019! It is crazy to type that. I will also be sending End of the Line 2 to the editor (more on that later) and possibly the pirate story that I've been talking about as well.
Happy Readings!

A long line

Good morning!
It is technically still before noon so I can still say that! It is Friday! Yes! However, also sad because it is also the last Friday off because I start back to full time on Wednesday. Back to balancing teaching and writing. Did I write everything that i had planned to this summer? No, but i got a lot of editing done which in the long run I knew was coming.

Which brings me to today's post. No it isn't a title of another End of the Line book ;) . It's what I have right now, a long line. So Call for Help (Beneath the Scars 2) is currently with my editor Jenn. She is a good way through. I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I did writing it. You'll get to meet a couple of the characters on Facebook this week as I do a character takeover this week.

Sadly End of the Line 2 Amy is not able to finish editing and that is fine. Jenn will be working on that within a couple of months. I keep going back and forth with the name I have two ideas for it Walking a Thin Line or Off the Beaten Path. I would love to see it as a trilogy, but i dont want to force anything either.

Talking about series, I went over the last Mistakes story and will be submitting it to an editor next so the werewolf story will be out in time for Halloween! Then Mistakes is done, which is weird to say, the five novella series done. I enjoyed writing paranormal, I don't touch it much as i probably should.

Okay that's three stories that are either at an editor or will be soon. My mom went through my pirate story that I wrote back in high school. I took it and refurbished it. I'm going to tweak the title, but here is another story that is in line for an editor. These characters might be more patient than the next character.

Who would have thought you'd hear the name Abby again? Invisible Bonds is my next for me to go through her edits then send to an editor. It is a little shorter and might end up being a novella instead.

Lastly, I just sent Define a Hero (Beneath the Scars 3) to my mom. We will see what she thinks when she edits it. She liked the second one. We'll see what she thinks of the third and last installment of the trilogy. The ending got me ;)

Haha like I said a whole lot of editing this summer! I started a new project which is a little different, but I'm excited to write again! Despite school starting up I hope to get some writing in as well.

Wow long post I'm sorry. Happy Friday!!

Endings

Hello!
I'm currently curled up on the couch with my fuzzy blue blanket and my laptop on my lap. I have "Little Shop of Horrors" playing as I stare at word document that is labeled for End of the Line 3. I've had an idea for it for a while now. Back when I was writing the second one I was thinking dividing that story in two then working in this idea, but that didn't happen.

As I was working on the last installment of Beneath the scars 3 I did get a little emotional. I'd been working on that trilogy for a few years. I take longer than most it seems. I actually felt like I was bye to these characters. I dont know if that makes me sound crazy or not.

The more I thought about it I didn't feel that way about writing the last End of the Line. Do I miss working with Aaron and Lauren? Big time. How could I not? Have you not read Aaron? So I'm not making any promises, but as I'm editing a couple of works I miss the actual writing part. I'm editing like three different stories right now. I like editing, but I want to do a little creating as well.

Truth be told, I love my Beneath the Scars series. I really bonded with these the characters and drove straight into the pages. However, with two of the three in editing mode, and editing Family Ties 2 it was a lot of PTSD for me. It makes me feel a little off so I was happy to take a break and write my Christmas Lites short story. Getting a little out of the funk, but enjoying the writing. Actually I sent the second Beneath the Scars to an editor! Yay! Hopefully Jenn enjoys it.
Have a good night!

Series Covers

Hello!
So as I have mentioned before End of the Line 2 is currently with an editor and I will be doing the cover revealing soon. However, the cover that I have does not exactly match/go with the cover of the first one. I could redo the cover of the first one, but I do not know if it is something that will throw people off if they do not match. Does having matching/similar covers in a series help make it a series? I would appreciate any input :)
Should series have matching covers?

Sample Sunday, err I mean Friday?

Hello!
So I will be going to wedding number two this year, and my boyfriend and I have four more to go to in the next year. It is one of the reasons why I went from saying I was going to go to Utopia to not. One of the weddings is the same time and that's a lot of traveling because not a single wedding is in Virginia. It stinks being popular...

So, my aunt is going through End of the Line 2, then I'll go through it, then I'll send it to an editor. I am still not sure if I want to call it Off the Beaten Path or Walking a Thin Line. However, while you are waiting for it, I decided to post a little sample on my Wattpad (click that link to read the story, remember it will contain spoilers for End of the Line!) account which I do admit I tend to forget about. Oops!

Look at me go, mentioning two upcoming releases in the same week!

End of the Line 2

Hello!
So today I was able to print out a copy of End of the Line 2 that I will be sending to my Aunt to act as a second pair of eyes and go through the manuscript. She might be related, but she is able to write notes, ask questions if she has any, and puts editing marks on the story. Thankfully I have family that is willing to do so, I'm sure she will be happy that this story is about 20K shorter than Project US!

I'm trying to type this as Lily wants to use my keyboard as a pillow and Leo wants to play fetch. So after she sends it back to me I'll go through the paper copy myself and see what I want to fix. There is something about catching mistakes in a physical copy. Then I'll send it to an editor. I already have this cover figured out so I am not worried about that. However, it does not match the first book so I'm debating on changing the first cover again so that they would somewhat match.

I am also trying to figure out the name. I have two different title ideas in mind for this book. I am leaving a poll up on the upper right hand corner for you vote on until September 4th.

Happy Voting!

Back to the land of social media

Hello,
Where have I been? I released a book then I disappeared. I'm sorry about that, what happened is I got a new job an hour and a half away from the current school that I was working at. So needless to say I had to find a place for Leo and I to a new place. We went from an apartment in Fredericksburg to a house in Sutherland Virginia. I am still a special education teacher, but instead of being in a middle school I will be in an elementary school which I'm excited. Leo is too, he has a backyard to call his own, well mostly he does have to share it with my boyfriend's dog, Lily.

I moved in last weekend (mostly I still have a couple of things in my apartment oops!). The cable/internet people weren't able to come to use until today. This morning I got to mail out a couple of ebooks out for review which was nice. I even finished editing the first round with End of the Line 2. I'm hopefully going to be sending the rough draft to my aunt to go through :)

I'm debating if I like "Walking a Thin Line" or "Off the Beaten Path" for the title for the sequel. Please share your thoughts in the comment section. Right now though I'm watching TV with Leo curled by my side.

Happy Readings!

Pirating E-books

Hello,
I woke up in a good mood today, I got the final edits of Project US. It will be my next novel and it is me returning to my Young Adult genre. I was also preparing my schedule to work on End of the Line 2. For giggles I sometimes google myself, it is a form of procrastination I will admit. I do not expect to be the next J.K. Rowling, but I have heard horror stories of other authors saying they find their work on pirating websites so I just like to keep an eye to see if I have hit that level.

I enjoyed seeing some people using my quotes on tumblr with cute pictures. I see quotes from Family Ties and End of the Line. I even saw a pinterest board named after one of the letters from Beneath the Scars. There were a couple other sites, pictures, and even some articles that have used my quotes. Honestly, I never thought that something like that would happen.

I came across a few sights that claimed that you could download my books for free if you signed up. I tried, but I didn't create a username/password so I only got so far. Then I came up to a discussion board. In this board there was a person asking how to download Beneath the Scars for free. It was nice to see a few people on the board talk about how they liked the book. There was one person suggesting a site to do so. Yet, there was only one person on the discussion board who stood up and said that's called pirating, and it's illegal. The person went on further saying how harmful it is for the author.

It is true I don't write for the money. However, I tend to put my books for a cheaper price. I tend to do a good amount of giveaways and made my ebooks free for libraries. I have also donated paperbacks a couple of times to libraries. I even post about how I need reviewers and that I'm giveaway free copies. It is one thing to think, okay I'm sure there are a few people getting free copies online, but to see it in writing is a little hurtful. The person also suggested borrowing from a friend. My friends and I would do that all the time in high school. There were a few books that six of us were rotating with. I have bought used copies of books when I am low on money.

So please...don't be a pirate go to your local library! Even if you have to contact the author. I know if someone asked me I'd see if their library has a copy, and if not I'd find them a deal or help them out.

Road Block

Hello,
I would've named this post writer's block, but it isn't just a mental block on writing. Sometimes it's an emotional block or for me I know work can clog my brain from everything else. For me I also have to take breaks from a story and start fresh with a story. I'm probably rambling because it is a little personal for one of the reasons why I am hesitant to work with one story and I'm debating on if I should even talk about it even as I am writing this.

I've been writing erratically with a couple of stories as I continued my first year writing. I'm in a new state, living by myself, and trying to figure out the ropes my first year. Some of those stories include, the third installment in my werewolf story, A Pirates Life for Me, Walking a Thin Line, Going Rogue, Project US, and Call for Help. Sequels I swear are my Achilles Heel. Walking a Thin Line I figured out the ending, I have it outlined and have been working on it in bits the past two weeks. I kept having to take breaks because there was a couple different ways I wanted to take that story and I was overthinking parts.

However, that's not the story that I wanted to talk about. Beneath the Scars and End of the Line are my top two stories. They go back and forth depending on when I look. Beneath the Scars I already have a rough outline for it to be a trilogy. Riley and Eponine will be in all of the books because well, who doesn't love Riley? However, the other books will follow some of the other men in Riley's troop when he had his accident. Should I be giving away spoilers like this? I hope not!

In Call for Help one of the main characters deals with cancer. I have been working on this story too in stages. However, I'm actually a little nervous to work on the story. That sounds probably immature and dumb as I am sure most of this post does. A little over a week ago I found out one of my best friends has cancer. He and I met in college and worked together at the same recreation center/gym. We don't always get to talk as much as we do, but when we see each other there's no stopping the conversations. I guess that's what you get for putting two teachers together in the same room in their free time. He's like my big brother. I was in shock when he told me.

Even though it's been over a week it still isn't sinking in. I can't imagine what him and his wife must be going through. He and I have talked on the phone and via text message a couple of times since then, but it isn't sinking in. I can admit that he has cancer, but the idea of what he is going through seems surreal. It seems like just the other day we were at work talking about Family Guy. I don't know if working on this story will be too close to home, making me face the fact that my friend indeed has cancer. The doctors caught it early for him and I'm staying positive. I'm hoping that me loving this story helps me stop being a baby and move past it to write. So sorry that this story will not be done as soon as I had planned...

Snow Days and sequels

Hello!
I'm currently sitting on my couch in my living room watching a random movie on my second snow day in a row and I just received an email saying we are having another one tomorrow. I have cleaned and reorganized my apartment, did laundry, caught up on work emails, wrapping three birthday presents, practicing make-up for a wedding this weekend, and spent endless hours researching endlessly about nothing and blowing up my boyfriend's phone so when he gets off work he has a bunch of dumb texts. What else are girlfriends for? Oh! I have also gotten my oil changed. I have gotten a little of writing down. I'll get more done tomorrow. I did a little work on End of the Line 2, which is slowly moving, I'm near the end, but I can't bring myself to write or focus writing right now.  I'm not selling that story probably considering how long it is taking me to write it. I just get distracted. That and it is sad to think that I will be saying goodbye to some friends again. I have a soft spot for Aaron and Lauren. They were my first published characters and they were based off characters in a dream I had for years.

I will be doing final edits on a short story that will be along side of Shadows from the Past! I can't wait to share that one, but once that is done I will be sending it to Amy to work her magic on. I don't publish much, but I hope they are worth the wait. This story it does not really matter if you read shadows from the past first or not, there are different characters, but in the same world. I had a few beta readers on it and they seemed to like it, and were interested to see if there will be a full length novel on the world. It's in the works is all I can say.

Now to Project US. My Aunt is doing edits on the second half of it and I got the first half back from my boyfriend since I accidentally left it at his place. She did the edits on a physical copy. I'm sure there is a forest out there that is plotting against me. This is my longest story up-to-date, 80K+. It's a little different, and I'm nervous to see what people will think, I've gotten some really positive feedback on it so that is helping my nervous. Of course I'm over thinking the cover and everyone I have asked liked something else. I'm going to have to go on my gut probably which will be fun of course. Can't you tell by all this writing that I've been locked up in my apartment for days?

I'll try to writing more soon. I have one of my best friend's getting married this upcoming weekend which means a trip back up to NJ this weekend! I haven't seen him in so long I'm excited to see him and his fiance tie the knot. This is my first friend to get married, and it is crazy to think that we reached this point in our lives. So grown up, yet, I'm still being mistaken for one of my students. Plus the boyfriend will be going with me to the wedding, our first event together. I'm probably more excited than I should be about that. That's probably because when it came to prom I always went with my friends never a date. I'll post pictures!

End of the Line

Good Afternoon!
So I'm working on about six or so stories right now. Why? Because I'm not fully working and I need to keep busy while I'm sending out what feels like a million applications and don't want to be stressing too much while I'm preparing for the job interviews I've been going on. It feels so good to be working with my characters again. I've missed them. I've been working on Project US (YA Romantic Suspense), A Pirate's Life for me (YA), Mistakes/Moonlit Eyes (YA - Paranormal Romance), Call for Help (NA Romantic Suspense Beneath the Scars 2), End of the Line 2 (YA), and might start working on two others. Yes, a little crazy. It feels nice to work on Young Adult books though.

I sometimes think that need to add more work than I should to my plate. It's an illness. You might have noticed that I've picked up End of the Line 2. I don't know what happened, but it sitting on the back burner for awhile I was able to get the gears moving again. Hopefully that continues. It has some interesting points, and I miss working with Aaron. That in mind I wanted the first and second to match interior wise. If you ever held the physical copy you might have thought the font was a little smaller. Looking at End of the Line with Family Ties and Beneath the Scars, I wondered how a book that has more words could be so much smaller. Family Ties is around 14K shorter, and Beneath the Scars is about three thousand words shorter. So I ask Amy from The Eyes of Editing and worked on the interior of End of the Line and now it's the biggest out of my collection. For that I'm sorry the price will be a little more, but at least your eyes will thank me. I fixed a couple interior problems that bothered me, I forgot to move a chapter heading down. My little OCD tendencies. It should be available again within a couple of days, or you can order End of the Line here now.
Happy Readings,
Ottilie.

What am I up to Blog Hop!

Hi!
So you may or may not have seen the the Blog Hop of different authors the past month. Sonya posted a week ago tagging me in her post. She is real sweet you should check out her post. She tagged me and I'll do my best to answer these questions without sounding all over the place!

1. What am I working on?
Currently I'm working on three different stories. One is in edit mode, one is almost done being written, and I just started a new story the other week. A Pirates' Life for Me is in the edit mode. I wrote this story when I was sixteen and now I'm going back, fixing the sentences and adding more so that it is more show than tell. The power of writing changing as one gets older. It is a Young Adult book, going back to some of my roots. The one that I am finishing up is the second book and last book for End of the Line. Hopefully everyone will like where I took that journey, add more to the world that everyone thought was gone. Lastly my new project all I'll say is that it is New Adult and that Riley might be making an appearance ;)

2. How does my work differ from others in its genre?
Psh awesome characters of course! I really hope at least, my characters are what makes my stories than any other stories out there. Pirates and the end of the world aren't new concepts, but hopefully it is my characters and their sense of adventure and the love that develops separates my stories from any other.

3. Why do I write what I do?
I write what I write because I have these characters who will not stop talking and begging to be heard! Plus there is that whole I love writing thing. I love teaching and helping students, but there is something nice where I have time to myself at night and I can just get lost in the words. I write what I write because books were and are still a big part of my life. The plots and characters are imprinted in my mind and at times have helped me through times where I needed that time to myself or help. Hopefully I am that escape to someone else.

4. How does my writing process work?
Oh gees, I really wish there was a nice way to put it, but reading this blog I'm sure you can tell I really am not that organized. What typically happens is I usually get my story ideas during times where I have a lot of tests or homework and shouldn't be writing. I usually write at night for a little bit after the homework and work are done. If it's a break than I write any free time that I can get! I usually have the TV on in the background, because I can't handle silence, it unnerves me which might explain why I work in a middle and high school.

Next on the blog hop...
1. Mia Hoddell
Mia Hoddell lives in the UK with her family and two cats. She spends most of her time writing or reading, loves anything paranormal and has an overactive imagination that keeps her up until the early hours of the morning.

With three poems published before the age of sixteen, Mia moved on to short stories but finding she had too much to tell with too little space, Mia progressed to novels. She started her first series (The Wanderer Trilogy) at the age of fourteen and since then hasn’t stopped writing. Elemental Killers is her second series and with an ever growing list of ideas, Mia is trying to keep up with the speed at which her imagination generates them.

Updates on End of the Line series :)

Dear Lovelies!
Sorry been a little MIA this semester is doing wonders for my stress level. I preferred last semester of student teaching far more! So anyway like I was saying I've been busy so I haven't been able to write much, pretty much a couple of sentences at a time kind of business. Not fun. Mostly it was between Walking a Thin Line (end of the line 2) and The Four Purposes of Oil. The Four Purposes of Oil I really like, but what had me stump with that one was me going back and fourth on which tense I want for it. That can slow things down. So Walking a thin Line prevailed! I finished it last night! Well at least the first draft! I'm so excited, but I wasn't sure how it would turn out or if it would finish because I kept stressing about whether the story needed to be told or not and not letting the words flow. Anyway! This book might take awhile to be released because of I still need to go back and edit it. While I edit it when I can I will try to write the third and last installment. If for some reason it isn't long enough then it will be a part 2 of the second one! Because how I ended the second one I'm pretty sure it is not a recommended situation to leave things ;)

Lastly, I did at one point I did have a title for the last book in this series. However much like a lot of things in my life, I misplaced that title somewhere. I remember liking it, so I have a couple of ideas, and I'm willing to hear your options, you can either click HERE and vote or voice your own opinion! Or you can click on vote on a title off to the right! Pass the word :)

Sample Sunday ~ The Four Purposes of Oil

Hey Lovelies!
Sorry that I haven't posted one of these in awhile, especially since I couldn't with working on Walking a Thin Line, since it is a second book I feel like posting a sample would be a major spoiler for the first book. So today I'm going to post a sample from The Four Purposes of Oil! I'm getting attached to the characters already so I hope you enjoy this Romantic Fiction ~ New Adult book. Heads up though, I will be changing this book to 3rd person instead of first. I will tell you though I will be learning more about cars so it will get a little fuller with details. Again this is just eh skeleton of the first chapter and I hope you enjoy :)

**I'm tossing and turning over if it should be in 3rd or 1st person that's why it changes sorry!!**

Chapter one
Noah

The speakers were shot, more static then music was really blaring out, but with the constant sounds of the machines it was hard to hear the music anyway. The sounds of the engines and tools roar as they fixed the inner workings of a car all were tranquil peace. There was nothing greater then working on a car. The warm air drifting into the garage and as a young man wiped his forehead with his forearm not caring that there was probably new smudge of grease on his face.
“Noah, did you figure out what’s wrong with the Wyant’s car?” a voice called out from the office, the door was open with a small fan blowing.
Glancing up the young man, Noah saw his boss Stan holding a box with the lo mein hanging over parts of the box. His t-shirt was half tucked into his jeans and baseball cap on his head; he was in his early thirties.
“Yeah I got it, it’ll take another couple of minutes if we’ve a piece that needs to be replaced,” Noah responded wiping his hands on his own t-shirt.
Stan’s face stretch into a half smile, “That’s my guy, I knew I kept you around for a reason.”
Noah raised an eyebrow and smirked, “Yeah so you don’t have to do the work.”
“I thought it was so he could look at our fine asses,” another voice shouted across the garage, Justin.
“I swear if your head inflates anymore Justin you won’t be able to fit through those doors,” Stan shot back pointing over to the garage door with his fork.
Justin grinned, his blond hair was held back by a bandana. He twirled a wrenched in his hand.
“Stop thinking you’re a pretty boy and finish that carbonator,” Stan rolled his eyes before going into the office.
“I swear it’s on a daily bases I feel bad for your poor mother,” Noah muttered heading out back with the supplies.
“My mom or my girl?” Justin asked for clarification.
Noah grabbed the part that he needed and headed back to the car he was working on.
“Both I guess, possibly more for your mom because your girl could leave if she wanted to.”
“Hey she got a taste of Justin, and now she doesn’t want to leave,” Justin chuckled, but he was peering into the hood of the car he was working on to see what Justin was doing.
“Oh so you’re drugging the poor girl,” I responded back moving parts around.
“Ha! Nothing, but with my charm.”
I shook my head. I had met Karen and he was a lucky guy.
“My butt you have charm.”
“Will you two Chatty Cathy’s put a sock in it or do I have to bring out the tea set for this ordeal?” Stan yelled out.

My body ached as I got home late that night, I always worked longer then what the hours said at GARAGE NAME. Trudging my feet across the tile floor of my apartment I opened the fridge to find something to eat. The light from the fridge lit up the small apartment, and it was pretty close to empty. There was a carton of orange juice, a box of baking soda, and something in a Styrofoam box. Narrowing my eyes I picked it up not remembering when the last time I brought something home was. There was a buffalo chicken wrap with some curly fries. How was it possible I brought home food from Angelia’s Diner? I usually ate the entire thing when I was there. Looking at the top of the box I smiled at the sticky note on there.

Miss you Idiot!
Remember to eat, noticed no food!
What’s wrong with you?
Remy

The best friend a guy could have. She must have dropped it off today since she was using my laundry room. Glancing over at the top of oven to see what time it was, a little after eleven. She probably would still be awake. Putting the food onto the small tray then into the toast my stomach growled as if it finally realized it was hungry. Pulling my cell phone out of my pocket using my short nails that were still dark from the grease from work I searched for her name. Pushing her Remy on the contact list I heard it ringing.
“Hey you’re alive! Or are you still in the garage?” Remy responded.
I chuckled, “Nah I’m home sorry for being a little MIA lately. Thanks for the food by the way.”
Remy laughed a little, “It’s the least I could do is give you food, I mean you work so much you need food. You use to be organized and on top of things.”
Glancing around my place that was just the opposite of what Remy just described.
“I’m never home, I pretty much live at the garage.”
“Yeah I noticed I went to your place and a couple of your neighbors asked if I was a new tenet.”
Turning the lights on in the place I peeked into the toaster and took out my food.
“I think I’m at your place more then you are,” Remy continued as I took a bite out of the food, best thing ever.
“Oh my God I think I love you,” I mumbled with food still in my mouth.
Remy broke out fully laughing.
“Well I know how you love their buffalo chicken wrap.”
“It’s food for the Gods,” I spoke with food still my mouth and I leaned back against my counter tops.
“So I’ve decided you and I need to go out,” Remy randomly blurted out.
I raised an eyebrow and stopped chewing.
“What are you talking about?”
“God way to make hanging out with your friend sound like a chore.”
I sighed rolling my eyes now waiting for the punch line.
“Sorry.”
“I haven’t seen you in what weeks?”
I narrowed my eyes trying to back track in time in an attempt to remember the last time I had seen my friend, or anyone who I didn’t work with.
“I’ll take your pause as a sign that I’m correct if not longer. So I know for a fact that the garage closes at eight so on Friday I will be kidnapping you at nine and we’re going out. You’ll be showered, shaven, and wearing something that does not have grease on it before we go to Murphy’s.”
“Why do I have to get so dolled up?”
“Showering is getting dolled up? If that’s a case you and I need to have a discussion about hygiene.”
“I’ll be clean, don’t get your panties all in a twist.”
I grabbed a couple fries and shoved them into my mouth.
“Sorry for wanting to hang out with my friend?”
“You should be, how dare you,” my voice was even before eating a couple more fries.
Crunchy fries were the best.
“So you want to meet there or do you want to car pool?”
“I’ll drive it sounds like you need a drink,” I offered.
“I work with kindergarteners all day, you do that and see if you need a drink.”
I chuckled.
“What happened to, ‘I want to have eight kids’?”
“Hey when they are my own kids I can do what I want!” Remy’s voice was borderline shriek.
“That’s a comfort.”
“Oh shove off.”
“What a friend, no wonder we haven’t hung out in awhile,” I joked with her.
“You’re a pain.”

“Woah, wait a minute,” Justin’s voice came from behind me in as I was inside the office. “You know it’s time to check out right at a normal rate?”
“No I didn’t notice that, I thought the moon and sun switched roles,” I muttered standing back up and took my car keys off of the hanger on the wall.
“Justin leave him alone this means I can actually close at the right time,” Stan responded locking the door behind us.
“So what’s up?” Justin asked as we headed to our cars.
His car was next to my baby.
“Remy said we needed to hang out so she is kidnapping me,” I replied opening my car door and standing out still looking over at him as he fiddled with his car.
“She’s still working on you isn’t she?” Justin glanced over me with serious eyes.
“I’m kind of hoping if I keep playing obvious the girl will give up,” I groaned running my fingers through my short hair.
Justin chuckled, “Yeah? How’s that working for you?”
I rolled my eyes and paused.
“That good huh?”
“Life isn’t a romantic comedy, you don’t always end up with your friend that you’ve known for years.”
“I know those damn movies are making our lives hard.”
“Just treat your girl for a night out every once in awhile and she’ll stop throwing these movies in your face.”
Justin raised an eyebrow at me, “Whose side you on?”
Laughing I replied, “Didn’t know I had to pick sides, but her cooking is better then yours.”
Justin smiled, “It is she’s cooking dinner tonight.”
“Pick up flowers for her or something maybe she’ll go easy on you tonight,” I suggested inching a little into my car so I wouldn’t have to face the wrath of Remy tonight myself.
Justin shrugged, “I should, so see you tomorrow.”
“See you tomorrow.”
Sitting in I slammed my door and headed home. Once I parked in the lot behind the apartments I waved to one of my neighbors while grabbing the mail. The neighbor squinted and awkwardly waved back. I guess Remy wasn’t joking about my neighbors not knowing who I was. I jumped the stairs taking a couple at a time and unlocked my door. Dropping the junk mail onto my counter with my keys top since I didn’t have a table I started to yank my shirt over my head as I walked to the bathroom. Turning the shower on and waited for the water to heat up. While waiting I decided to brush my teeth and check the facial hair situation, got to love the few moments of being able to multitask.
Once I was showered and dressed for the evening I grabbed my keys once again and headed towards Remy’s place. She was renting a place till the condo she was buying was done being built. Texting her to let her know that I was there I bopped my head around a little to the music. Finally she came strolling out of her place. I had to give it to her, she walked in heels like a well trained model. Remy tossed her hair over her shoulders as she made her way over, in jeans and a off the shoulder shirt. She got into the car and turned to look at me grinning.
“See you clean up well when you actually leave the garage!”
I rolled my eyes.
“Yeah, yeah whatever,” I muttered pulling out of her complex.
“Oh don’t be such a sour puss or this night is going to suck,” Remy responded as she fiddled with my radio stations.
Shaking my head I finally pulled into Murphy’s place where most of the spots were taken and people were crossing the parking lot laughing. When we got out of the car the live country music roared causing the two of us to smile. Remy grabbed my hand and pulled me across the parking lot and into the restaurant. The whole middle was wooden floors in front of the stage where the live music was held so that people could dance. Off to the side was the bar and around the perimeter were tables for everyone to sit at. I prefer the seats near the bar so I had a nice view of the poor guys who got dragged across the floor.
“I can’t wait to get a drink,” Remy was bouncing in her seat as she grabbed the menu even though I knew she that whole menu by heart.
“Good to know that you need to drink to be out with me,” I spoke dryly smirking at her.
“I didn’t know I had to threaten my friend to hang out with me,” She responded not taking her eyes off of the menu.
I rolled my eyes as one of the waitresses came by, she was friendly with Remy as she took out drink orders then left.
“See so far, all is good right?” Remy asked smiling at me as she leaned on her elbows on the table.
“Yeah, yeah, I never had any doubt about that, I’m just busy,” I replied with a shrug.
“And I sit around eating Oreos all day?”
“Well you deal with five year olds,” I smirked.
Remy slapped my arm from across the table as I laughed.
“You’re rotten! I know your daddy raised you with more manners!”
Chuckling, “Yeah he did, but you know I got his humor.”
Remy rolled her eyes down to her drink stirring it a little, “What are the odds of me getting you on the dance floor?”
I snorted, “Not on your life is that happening.”
I started to pat around my pockets for not only my release, but also my escape. Finally I pulled out my box of cigarettes and Zippo lighter. Remy’s face scrunched.
“Ugh, I don’t get you and that nasty habit,” Remy spat.
I shrugged, “I don’t smoke near you and never have so chillax. I’ll be right back.”
Once I was outside I opened the cartage and cursed under my breath. There was an IOU from Justin. What kind of guy takes a man’s last cigarette?
I made my way to the side of the road and waited till there was slow enough traffic for me to cross the pharmacy. The beep greeted me and I made my way over to the only cashier on duty. This woman with short black hair carrying a small bag up as well. I waved her to go in front of me.
“They couldn’t take this back there?” The cashier questioned with a raised brow and mid chew of the gum.
She shook her head, “He said they were closing and to go here.”
The cashier popped her gum then finished the young woman’s transaction. She bent her head over her small plastic bag as she fished for her wallet once again to put her money away, but she stepped aside so that I could pay.
“Hey Dawn, the usual,” I spoke taking out my own wallet as the cashier took out a pack of cigarettes for me.
The young woman walked out of the store. I paid for my pack and walked outside breaking the seal. Once outside the girl was still there searching through her bag frantically. A curse was uttered under her breath before she started to glance around on the ground.
“Do you need help?”
She glimpsed up before biting her bottom lip, “I think I dropped my keys somewhere I can’t find them in my purse.”
“Is there anything on the keychain?”
She raised an eyebrow at me.
“I want to know what I’m looking for.”
She nodded, “There’s a flat monkey on it, and they are to my Nissan.”
Nodding my head I helped her search the ground for something shiny. Pacing the sidewalk to two of us searched in the dim parking lot lights. Finally something twinkled near the bushes alongside of the pavement. Bending over my hand grazed the woman’s, she retreated her hand. Picking up the pieces of metal I straightened back up to look at her. Handing over her keys once again her eyes did not meet up with mine.
“Here you go.”
“Thanks,” she brushed some of her short hair behind her ear after she took the keys from me. “Well thank you again I’m going to go now.”
“Okay, by the way-” before I could introduce myself the woman hopped off towards her car leaving me behind not sure what really happened. She was really in a rush.

“I swear you make us all look bad,” Justin called from behind my back as I was hunched over a hood.
“Morning to you too,” I replied straightening up and cracking my neck.
“Do you live here? I swear I saw you leave yesterday,” Justin continued before taking a big gulp of his coffee.
“I left, hung out with Remy, came home slept, then came here. You can call Remy if you don’t believe me, but if you wake her up I’m not taking responsibility for your death,” I replied hunching over once again working on a couple of things so my voice came out short.
“Fair enough, so I took your advice and brought home something for Karen. She’s been wanting a puppy-“
“Woah,” I backed away from the car I was working on. “I said flowers not a living creature.”
“I didn’t get her a real puppy, I’m not ready for that commitment, sharing an animal together. No I got her a stuff animal dog of the one she mentioned she wanted once. This way it shows I’m listening to her, but that we’re not ready to have a dog yet, especially since her place doesn’t allow dogs.”
Nodding my head I pointed the wrench at him, “I change my mind, that’s a nice touch.”
Justin with a wave of his hand bowed.
“So how was getting out last night,” Justin questioned again walking over to the wall of tools.
“Good, but that reminds me,” I chucked a hand rag at him. “When were you planning on telling me that you took my last cigarette?”
“Sorry Karen has been trying to get me to quit so I haven’t bought any and I really needed one.”
“Wow really,” I spoke quietly. “Good for you though, guess I should go hide the pack I got last night then.”
Justin just nodded his head as his hands jittered about.
“When I was getting a pack last night I met this strange woman. She was in such a rush to get out and lost her keys. I had to help her find them then once I did she like disappeared into the night.”
“What’s weird about that?” Justin called out as he wheeled himself under a car that was left before he showed up. “What thought she was good looking and didn’t get her name?”
“She didn’t have bad legs, but just a gut feeling.”
“You’re over thinking things.”

House Cleaning

Hey Lovelies,
I miss saying that in my classroom...house cleaning. Then again I had to explain what I meant by that and that I wasn't making the students clean the classroom. Want to get everyone updated with what I'm up to. Oh gees my Russian reading plus my senior thesis so needless to say I will be a little busy. I'm still going to try to squeeze in writing especially as I try to get my resume shiny and pretty for schools to want me to be their newest History/Social Studies teacher. I'm still trying to get through End of the Line's trilogy, however I'm also working on a couple other stuff, (one of which is untitled) because it helps me relax from school. Also multiple stories because my mind seems to be everywhere. Plus my friend Amy is almost done editing Beneath the Scars! I love that story and can't wait for everyone to see it. I'm probably going to be releasing a short story soon because I feel bad that I keep pulling people along when I don't mean to!

Lost in the Woods

Hey Lovelies!
No I'm not actually lost in the forest, just working on End of the Line 2, and they are currently oh right won't spoil anything! I do want to say though that I am still working on it, just taking a little longer then I thought. I'm working on it though, just had to be studying as well. I have to take a test to be certified to teacher, I unfortunately missed it by 4 points in September. So I have to retake in on the 26th, so I have been studying, tests are not my thing. Anyway I'm close to writing the end of Walking a Thin Line and know how I'm going to start off the third (later will be revealed I seemed to have misplaced my list of options...) so I'll have fun thinking of new ones. Anyway when I'm done writing Walking a Thin Line and I'm working on the revisions I'm going to try to work on the 3rd to make sure that it is long enough to be on it's on, if not I'll make it a part 2 of Walking a Thin Line. I'll keep you in the loop :)

Giveaway ~ End of the Line

Hey Lovelies!
So I'm still trying to get End of the Line's foot in the door. I'm still working on the second book to this, and it just took me in a direction I wasn't expecting so it is taking me a little bit. On top of doing the Goodreads giveaway I decided to do a giveaway of the ebook version! I'm going to giveaway a couple of copies of End of the Line (Depending on how many people enter!). For now I'm searching for TWO winners, (however if you remember in the past I tend to give out more then I say I will depending on how many enter). In the spirit of Halloween and the fact that this book is based off a nightmare of mine, you should list either a nightmare you've had OR a fear of yours! Since I don't want to ask followers to do something I wouldn't do, I've shared a nightmare of mine with you (End of the Line) and one of my biggest fears is snakes....

Rules:
Comment this post:
    -leave your email address!
-A nightmare you have had OR a fear of yours!
Last day will be October 12, 2012 (Friday!)

Good Luck and spread the news! :)
More that enter, more that win :)

When so much is lost how does one to have the strength to move on? At seventeen Lauren was prepared for yet another year of school. Then asteroids hit, killing all of those she knew except for a few other teens from her neighborhood. Joining forces with her classmate Aaron, they work together on the journey in the hopes of finding more people that are alive. On the way, threats of starvation, illness, and freezing to death don’t compare to the danger of Dean Manson. Manson is an ex-con out for revenge against Aaron. With so much working against them these teens fight for everything even if it means denying their feelings just for the chance to see a new day.

Time

Hey Lovelies!Sorry for so MIA, I know summer was suppose to be be my catch up time. I've been working 5 days a week, 7-10 hours a day. Well yesterday's shift was over 12 hours which was not so fun on the feet! Especially when I'm suppose to be studying the the PRAXIS and writing. I've been busy and feel like there is seriously not enough time in the day! It doens't help to have more closing shifts tonight till thursday, blah! I got to write a little of Runaway though at work, pretending that I was just working on an email... I've been doing a little writing on Runaway, Walking a Thin Line, and a little of Within your Eyes (Cinderella story). I've been so scattered! I'm going to be done with that job on August 15th though, then I'll be working towards my student teaching this fall! Haha because that will totally be no stress! Plus so much more free time...not...

Back to the writing though. I am working on End of the Line's sequel don't worry. I've been in the mood in writing Contempory fiction, I'm not sure where that craving came from, but I've been running with it. Even though I did submit a short horror story to my publisher (BCP) for it's Halloween collection, I used the story that I had for the literature charity that Elizabeth was trying to set up. It's a little different than the stuff you all have seen of mine so it'll be interesting. Otherwise the only other news I have is that both Amy's are still editing (one for End of the Line, the other for Beneath the Scars). I'd like to do a mini blog tour though when End of the Line is done for that story and Family ties though! I'll end now and save you all!

Sample Sunday!

Hey Lovelies!I was thinking and thinking that there was probably not a sample that I could show with you all today. I've showed a couple samples of Family Ties, a few of Beneath the Scars which my friend Amy has started to edited (which by the way she says my writing has improved so exciting! like I said take whatever advice you get :) ). And the two main stories that I'm working on right now are sequels so I really can't show considering chapter one of Walking a thin Line will destroy the ending of End of the line! Same with the first chapter of Invisible Bonds with Family Ties! Seeing the problem?? Then I noticed well I only showed chapter 1 of End of the Line and I'm hoping that the other Amy editor will be done with that within a couple of months so you all can see the new edition! So here is chapter 2 of End of the Line :)

End of the Line
Chapter One Lauren
Chapter Two
Aaron

I

watched Lauren fall asleep near her brother and his friends.  I hated her at that moment. There really was no other way to express the feelings I had towards her at this moment. She had someone with her that she knew; family. Not only that, but a group of people while I didn’t. I was alone. She had her brother while I had a man who wanted my head on his wall as a trophy. Looking at this strange cluster I suddenly wondered why I was even helping them, just like Lauren had asked earlier. Even the mere thought of questioning my action, as it seeped through my mind, made me sick to my stomach. How could I look at them, especially the two kids and doubt my decision.

I was never friends with Lauren.  We had been on the same bus since kindergarten, until one of my buddies began to drive me in High School. She and I had a few classes together over the years. Lauren was the silent one in the class, with the high stack of books, not daring to leave them in her locker because you might need one of the textbooks in class that day. You know the student that was always prepared for a class with a sparkling record throughout their school years.  She could be absolutely annoying.  Was being a perfectionist really, honestly necessary?  In my handbook of life; no.

Yet when I heard another person’s cry for help after watching my parents being crushed as they tried to run for the house for their own safety, I had to help.  I saw it all happen as I was sitting on my window sill with my window wide open so I could hang a leg over while I was thinking.  I was overheating and needed some air, mom didn’t like when I sat like this, but I’ve always found it relaxing.  Then in the distance there were bizarre shapes in the sky, and in a blink of an eye, scattered rocks the sizes of houses or bigger were heading towards the earth.

I closed my eyes quickly and shook my head to get the images out of my mind.  I was so not ready to face that.  It was the first time a major feeling of guilt and horror took over me.  The only family I really had, and known had been killed before my sight.  They had put up with me, more then they signed up for.

Listening closely to the air blow by, trying to make sure that no one was coming, I looked over at the six of them and I felt my heart race. Trying to calm down I hung my head low to try to get my breathing back to normal. How did this whole mess happen? I just became an orphan for the second time in my life. The first time was miserable enough, but a second time? I possibly just lost my all my friends.  I was stuck with Lauren and her luggage. After what seemed like forever one of the kids started to move, which made Lauren come around.

She sat up looking like she hadn’t really slept either.  Her eyelids looked heavy with dark circles, not all of which seemed to be from her make-up. Lauren rubbed her head then stretched her limbs a little. Her jean blue eyes met with mine and they were filled with pain, as she remembered what happened. I noticed because it shined in her eyes and I was sure she could see the same shimmer in my own irises.

“We should go, so wake them up and we’ll be out,” I spoke softly.

She nodded and started to wake them up gently.  I remembered when my mother did that for school or if I was sleeping in too late on the weekends and she feared I wouldn’t be able to sleep that night. That would never happen again. She would tenderly rub my back until I made signs that I was alive. The two littlest ones started to stir then got up, looking confused. Almost like they forgot that they fell asleep on the ground instead of their beds. That yesterday was all, but a nightmare instead of reality.

Next, the other three woke up. Thus we started moving, as the two little ones wondered where breakfast was.  This made me remember when we were learning about all the tragedies throughout history. I think it was right before the French Revolution when the teachers focused on the reasons the parents did the things they did, because they couldn’t take hearing the agonizing cries of their children who were starving.  This was definitely going to be a long day, the first of many to come; I could feel it.

Lauren was walking in front with me as she held the two littlest ones by the hands. I could tell she wanted them to walk the longest they could because she wasn’t going to be able to carry both of them for too long. Meanwhile, the three in the back were quiet, but James gave me death glares every once in awhile. I could sense his glare on the back of my head, and I would turn my head as I felt the pricking. Our eyes would meet and we’d both scowl.  I still couldn’t figure out what I did to him.

“I want pancakes!” Sean pipped up, nearly skipping.

“Waffles!” Paige spoke, challenging Sean’s food choice.

“Pancakes!”

“Waffles!”

“Paige, Sean, there aren’t waffles or pancakes available right now,” Lauren commented, sounding upset about them being hungry.

“But it’s time for breakfast!  I woke up, so it is time for food!”

I grinned, suppressing a chuckle. I really liked the little boy’s logic. I watched as he looked up at his sister with a straight face, which made me want to laugh even more. I had a feeling that this was a normal relationship for the two of them.

“I know, but we have to wait a little longer for food.”

Those two weren’t the only ones hungry. I was starving too! I kept glancing at the two of them as they each swung from one of Lauren’s arms. Lauren looked tall next to the two of them. She always seemed smaller at school. Was it because we were always sitting in desks, not near each other?

“We’ll walk over those hills and see if that town is up and functioning.”

Lauren agreed by nodding her head as we headed over the hills and I helped her with the two little ones when they almost fell. Once they were standing next to me, I assisted Lauren by pulling her hand to give her some balance. Her hand was smaller than mine, it was strange seeing long clean nails on my hands, yet in school I never really noticed or thought of her.

Moving on quickly to snap out of it, I helped the two girls. I really needed to learn the rest of their names. I doubt that they would want to be referred by numbers. James didn’t want any help and because I had found the weak link in our group I let him stumble over the rocks on the slant.

“Aaron we have a problem,” Lauren spoke

I looked at her, confused, as I went up rest of the way to the top of the hill where e as she turned to look at me. she was. My eyes went wide and my jaw dropped, not believing what I was looking at before me. Only a couple of feet below us water covered everything with only a few things sticking above the new water line.  I thought I saw someone’s satellite poking out. This was definitely not looking good. I turned right and left seeing that the water stopped along the hills, but this couldn’t stay forever.  We had to move before it rained or something, it looked like the ocean line had increased, any more water would be much worse for us if we didn’t start heading in a new direction. Small waves caused a current in the new water zone which made me feel uneasy. The scene appeared to be unstable.

“Aaron does this mean the ocean was hit with one of the asteroids?” Lauren asked in a murmur near my ear so the rest wouldn’t panic.

I couldn’t speak, just shaking my head, shrugging my shoulders in disbelief.  This couldn’t be happening!  This was getting more awful by the second.  Just when I didn’t think things could become stickier, they did.

“Hey look Paige the beach came to us!” shrieked the little boy by Lauren’s side, with his hands shooting up into the air.

He was about to run over to go into the water yet I was able to grab him by the back of the shirt before he could make his leap. My heart almost leapt out of my chest, for I feared what would have happened to this little guy if I didn't get to him in time. I wasn’t sure how Lauren would react to see her brother dive into the wet unknown. Lauren grabbed him from me and held him close to her with her eyes closed tightly.

“Lauren, I can’t breathe, you are hugging me too tight!” the little boy squirmed in her embrace, using his small arms trying to push his sister away from him.

I smiled at the little guy as I picked up the little girl with dark red hair (who must have been Paige) just in case she tried what he had failed doing.  We really didn’t need to anymore attempts.

“Sean you can’t do that!  You don’t know how to swim! Stay by my side and don’t leave me!” she nearly cried, her hold on him didn’t seem to loosen.

I was a bit taken aback by this. I had never seen anyone that caring over a sibling. I was adopted and didn’t have siblings. I looked at her practically killing her brother with her hug, because the fear of losing him was too much to bear. I was resentful of them. I was attached to my parents since the time I was with them at age six, and I was envious of these two.

“Lauren, we should probably keep going,” I said quietly trying not to sound bitter, attempting to push those feeling deep inside of me.

“Okay.”

We headed down the hill slowly, trying not to kill ourselves from the tilt. I kept a close eye on Lauren carrying her brother, and the youngest of the other three, since I was carrying the other very small child in my arms. Once we were on our way again we changed our direction so we were heading not south or east, but rather west. If the water levels were this bad here, south was nonexistent.

“Lauren, what are everyone’s names?” I asked, kind of embarrassed to take so long to even ask.

She grinned.

“This is my brother, Sean, and the one you are holding is his best friend Paige...both are six. The one that has black hair a little shorter then her shoulders is Jill, and the other girl with very short brown hair is Mandy. Then there is James, and you know me from school.”

“What are the others ages?”

“James is sixteen, Jill is fifteen, and Mandy is nine.”

Nine wasn’t too young, so the only ones we really had to worry about were Sean and Paige. They would need the most help and attention.

“So, oh dear saviour, what is plan B?” called out a voice reeking of bitter sarcasm.

I turned to glare at James stopping everyone in our little group from keep travelling forward.

“Listen to me you little piece of-“

Lauren slapped me on the back of the head.  I felt so stupid, as I stood there in shock with my mouth left wide open. She hit me!

“Listen you two!  We have to get along if there is any chance for us to stay alive! One person alone can’t survive out here so we have to work together and stop fighting with each other. We don’t know what is out there so come on you two, please get it together! Furthermore, no cursing, there are little kids around us!” Lauren ordered, I almost felt like I was back at school with her scolding us.

I looked at the quiet book worm that was now bossing me around and I couldn’t believe I was desperate enough to save her. I knew that was horrible to say, but I could tell this was definitely going to be harder then I thought with this group. She walked ahead of James and me with the other two girls, as I stood there with the little girl in my arms. She looked up at me with big brown apprehensive eyes, almost desperate for any comfort she could get. I was not known for my reassuring traits or my child caring skills; I didn’t know what to do. I had to listen and work with the geek if we had any chance for all of us to survive.

“I’m tired.”

“My feet hurt.”

“Please you two! I don’t think I can carry either of you anymore. I promise we’ll stop soon,” Lauren begged after hours of walking.

I knew we should have been close to Pennsylvania, as I remembered how long it took when my parents took that trip there two summers ago and we have been walking for hours. I glimpsed over at her and I could tell they were all as tired and I was. The lack of sleep was taking its toll on me. Except, unlike the rest of us, Lauren had the two little ones clinging to her, and they only wanted her. Holding Paige didn't last very long as she was afraid of me, so Lauren had one on her back for awhile, with the other in front. After a while, she made them walk for a bit. They wanted to be held again, but Lauren didn't have the strength at the moment.  I honestly didn’t know how she held the two of them for as long as she did.

“How about we take a little break then? We’re not too far from the border.”

I think we are anyway. It was hopeful thinking on all of our parts.

We still hadn’t found a place, that wasn’t affected by the water or the rocks, to find people that were still alive to help us. So, we decided to go to Pennsylvania to see if anyone was there. I had my fingers crossed. Lauren practically collapsed onto the ground when I spoke of a break. The others followed her, how much did I push them?

She curled up on a small patch of grass by a tree. Sean and Paige soon pursued a spot close next to her probably since she was the nearest thing they had to a mother now. Sean was right against her as he held his friend close to him, and then Lauren put an arm around both to keep them secure to her. Mandy went over to Paige as Jill went along with her, leaving James to watch, sitting by a tree nearby.  Then there was me, the misfit in the group, watching them.

I sat down observing them not really certain on what to do. I knew I had to form a relationship with them since we would be together for awhile. I couldn’t figure out how to bond with this group so that we could work together. I mean I wasn’t up for playing house with Lauren. The new family in the works had Lauren as the mother...and me, well...the father of these kids. That just wasn’t my style or apart of my plan when I helped them out of the basement. I had only wanted to help them our of the wrecked house. And yet I felt the feeling of need...the sentiment of wanting to be with them.

“Lauren,” the little girl’s voice pipped up from the silence that had taken over.

“Yes, Paige?” Lauren mumbled, sounding half asleep.

“Scary man is looking at us.”

“What scary man?”

Lauren sat up in alarm, and I scanned around.  Then Lauren let out a small giggle as Paige started to point to me.

“Paige, that is Aaron, he isn’t going to hurt you.  You should probably take a small nap, okay?” Lauren aimed to sooth the girl in a tender voice, caressing the little girl’s cheek as she lay back down.

Great.  I save their lives and I am referred as Scary Man. Not something any guy wanted to hear. I watched as Lauren kept the two close to her and hummed with her eyes closed. They seemed to fall asleep to her random tune, and I didn’t realize that I was starting to smile at this small scene in front of me.  I caught myself and stopped the smile from showing for too long. I really wanted to be near them, but I couldn’t let myself for some reason. There seemed to be a wall around me that I wasn’t really willing to jump over. What’s wrong with me?

After yesterday’s break we headed out early the next morning. No one seemed excited to be waking up to continue travelling, not that I could blame the others.  By how James acted anyone would think that I did this stuff for fun. That was no the case.

Today the sky was gloomy; overcast hung heavy in the air.  The clouds were pronounced in addition to slow moving.  Yet the scent in the air was still smoky.

Lauren held the children by their hands while they were trying to play ‘I spy’, Lauren was worried about playing that game because we didn’t know what exactly we would find in the surrounding area.  The last thing she wanted was a dead body to pop up.

“I spy with my little eye something that is gray!” Paige exclaimed with a wide grin on her lips.

Scrunching his face, Sean inspected the world around him.

“A rock?” he asked as we drew closer the shambles of buildings and the stacked up boulders that used to hold up bridges and roads.

I, myself, glanced around for something that was gray.

“Broken building?” Lauren asked her voice sombre, probably anxious that a six year old would pick that as her object.

Paige giggled.

“Nope!  Lauren you are wrong!” Paige squealed.  “Do you guys give up?”

“How about you ask Aaron,” Lauren suggested, smiling as she peeked over at me.

I raised an eyebrow.

“What do you think it is?” Paige asked her voice not as happy as a moment ago.

“Um,” I started not really sure what was gray around here.  “Clouds?”

Paige giggled once more.

“Nopes!  I win!  It’s a bridge!”

I looked up from our path to see a long structure before us. The metal pieces at the top were bent in parts, yet there was our chance to explore for safer surfaces. We approached the bridge with the Delaware River covered in small white caps from the now rapid paced current in the river. Yet in the middle of the water, after what seemed to have crashed through the road of the bridge, was a smouldering asteroid. The heat of the rock and the cooling water cause steam to flow around the area like dry ice at Halloween.

“How are we supposed to cross that?” Jill asked.

“Hope there is still area for us to walk on?” Lauren responded with a shrug of her shoulders, but doubt was written all over her face.

“Only one way to find out…” I spoke up, trudging in front of the others.

We were all next to each other long ways walking across the medal grid of the bridge. Our steps were cautious.  There were cars abandoned along the bridge, burned up bodies sat in the driver seats of a couple of the cars. The trapezoids that acted as tall metal, gapped walls of the bridge left faint shadows on the ground which we walked on.

Once we reached the middle of the bridge there was a hole that took up the bulk of the bridge leaving only the perimeters to walk on, which would test our balancing skills. I put Sean on my back with Paige on Laurens as we walked carefully with one foot in front of the other. A shuffle that would prevent too much movement so that we wouldn’t fall to our deaths into the rapids. Silence over took us as rushing water filled our ears. I stopped myself from holding hands with Lauren in order to keep her close behind me. My breath was held, hoping that we would all be kept safe. I glanced up at the wooded trees before us. We only had to get through this section and we would be out of harms way for a while.

“Only a little bit further guys!” I yelled over the sound of the water.

The vapours from the asteroid made my eyes water.  I felt Sean lean over on my back in order to get a better look at the rock that was related as the ones which ruined our lives.

“Try to stay still a little longer Sean, we are almost away from the hole, once we get off the bridge you can go crazy.”

He listened without a comment as he straightened up on my back. Lauren yelped just as I stepped onto the stable part of the bridge. Just in time for Lauren to catch her balance and for me to pull her against my chest. Her blue eyes locked onto my.

“Lets keep moving before the bridge falls apart,” Lauren spoke up before we rushed off the bridge and into woods not knowing what was ahead of us.

Paige and Sean were running circles around us as Lauren and I were hoping that we were nearing a town. One that would be, well, not completely destroyed.  Lauren kept an eye on the children; she seemed to be anticipating for them to fall as she kept her hands out, ready for action. So far finding a safe place wasn’t looking good at all which was worrying us. Well, not the two little ones who seemed kind of oblivious to the situation. I actually hadn’t heard a word from Mandy and Jill since they seemed to be in shock still, not that the rest of us weren’t. It was just that we were trying to make sure that we could find help. In the last couple of days, however, it wasn’t looking good.  We were all reacting differently.

“When can we stop for food?” asked James, his voice sharp.

“We’ll eat when we actually find something to eat, James,” I answered, my eyes watching the two youngest ones, trying to make sure I don’t trip over them again.

“We haven’t seen anything for hours,” he growled.

“We did take apples off the tree,” Lauren added, coming into the argument between James and I, her eyes were on James.

She was now carrying a book bag that I found, which must have been left behind by a camper.  Yet there wasn’t an owner in sight, nor was there food in the sack. As we continued to travel, we came across a farm; parts were still in a haze from the asteroids. There were still some apple trees that were not completely destroyed.  We picked some of apples to fill the backpack, not sure when we would find food once more.  The little two, could not fully reach the trees were still eager to hunt down apples. We attempted to try to show them what a good apple looked like and what a rotten or a unripe apple looked like.

“I don’t want an apple,” James grumbled.  “I’m fine.”

I wanted to hit him!  Before I could get a chance to do anything, I felt something touch my hand.  I turn to see Lauren pulling me along with her and the two little ones. This gesture was something utterly shocking from her, leaving me dumbstruck. She started to walk along with me, quiet, as the two little ones then started to run circles between us, her long fingers, interlaced with my own. Lauren laughed making it the first real amusement through this whole mess and I smiled. Maybe there was hope after all.

“I am really looking forward to finding a town soon," Lauren spoke, changing the topic, sounding tired and a little down on her luck.

“Yeah, same here,” I responded, looking down at our locked fingers.

“Not to sound high maintenance, but I really want to shower,” she continued, oblivious to the fact our fingers were intertwined.

I gave a small chuckle. We all didn’t exactly smell like a basket of flowers at the current moment. I would not blame anyone for wanting to shower, especially since it’s been a few days since our last one in a real bathroom.

“It would also be nice to have an actual bed for them to take their nap.”

“Yeah, I know what you mean. Hopefully, we’ll be able to get you some shoes, too,” I said looking down at her bare feet which were pretty dirty, wishing not to find blood on them caused by all the rough terrain.

“Well, yeah it wasn’t like I planed on needing shoes, so I took them off in the house. Just be happy that the others have shoes.”

“I still feel bad about making you do all this when you don’t even have any shoes on,” I spoke, as her and I raised our arms up like a bridge for Sean and Paige to run under.

“We’ve been walking on grass, dirt, and the occasional puddle, so don’t worry about me,” She answered without sounding fake.

That was when some vapour started to rise up in the air in the distance, we were drawing closer. I held my breath fearing that we had come across another deserted town. A town which would be completely in ruins without a single sign of life. So we approached slowly not sure what to except. Yet the town illustrated no signs of people; the town didn’t look too badly shaped though.  Most of the windows were broken, doors askew, and a couple of buildings looked unstable, but not too bad.  We headed towards one of the houses with the door slightly open, but it was still connected to its hinges. Letting my fingers loosen away from Laurens, I went in first not sure what to expect.

“Hello!” I called into the hallway, my voice filled the rooms bouncing back to us; the home almost had an air of hollowness.

No reply, so I tried again. Still nothing, so the rest joined me in the doorway in a tight cluster. There was some dust on the floor, but the place shouldn’t have had this much dust. Then I realized it wasn’t all dust, but dirt, the area must had a strong winds from the asteroids from our town and the winds from the new shore line.

“I guess we should stay here for some rest?” Lauren asked.

“Yeah, but stay on the alert the whole time,” I replied eyes still scanning the interior of the house, inside of me adrenaline was ready to kick in.

Lauren watched as two little ones separated from the huddle and started to jump on the couch in the room next to the door, then race up the stairs, their feet thudding loudly.  I was not sure where their energy came from. Lauren ran after them, fearing them leaving her sight, and I stayed with the other three.

“We should check the house out and see if they still have food in here,” I finally spoke, trying to break the silence that was filling the downstairs.

We went into the kitchen and saw that the windows were wide open.  I thought back to home, my dad was not happy with the electric bill so he turned off the AC and had the windows wide open allowing the fresh air to fill the house.  Shaking my head I brought myself back to the present.  The refrigerator wasn’t working, but the owners still had food in the pantry.

“Don’t eat all of that now; you can eat a little now though. James, watch them and I'll go check on Lauren with the other two.”

He mumbled something incomprehensible under his breath so I ignored him knowing it wasn’t going to be good. I climbed up the stairs after the three to find them in the first bedroom. It looked like it must have belonged to a child since there were a few toys in there that they were playing with while Lauren laid on the small bed.

“You want to hide here for a few days?” I asked the sleepy Lauren, her eyelids fighting to stay open.

“You think it’s safe?” I asked leaning against the doorway to watch the scene.

“We hadn’t run into Manson yet, so the odds are pretty good we’ll be safe here,” I spoke straightforwardly.

“I wasn’t just referring to him. If everywhere looks like what we have seen, if there are any people left they are going to be desperate and kill anyone in their way.”

“Don’t worry about anything ‘til we run into it. As long as we stay on our toes, we’ll be fine. Just don’t be Chicken Little and expect danger behind every corner,” I said, trying not to make it come out as a snap.

She pushed some of the curly auburn hair, which had fallen in her face, behind her ear. Her eyes were falling heavily to meet the bottom lids even through she fought to keep them open.  I watched them fall meeting, then burst open to frankly blink.

“How about you take a shower now since we don’t know when the next time we’ll see one again?  I’ll keep watch.”

She raised an eyebrow at me.

“You’ll keep watch?”

My eyes went wide.  Not what I was hinting at!

“Out here!  I’ll be out here...keeping watch for the little ones and everything,” I spoke, nearly tripping over my words.

“Are you sure that is a wise move for me to do that?”

“Sure, why not, it’s just a shower then you can take a nice long nap, or attempt to really sleep.  You can even go see if the people in the house left anything for you to use.  You could actually get shoes.”

She stood up slowly, walked past me to the room next door to this one.  I heard the door shut and water start.  The other two turned to look at me, finally realizing that I was there, as if expecting me to entertain them just like when a new babysitter comes and they are testing the newcomer to see if they deserve their trust.  I was never great with kids.  I never knew what to do with them, or what to say.  I usually had to watch what I said in front of them.  My mouth did not always have the best censor.

“You want to play with us?” asked Paige holding out a stuffed animal Lion to me.

“Um…sure,” I answered nervously.

I walked over, bent and took the animal not sure what to do next. Thinking of what Lauren would do, I sat on the floor with them. I crossed my legs and sat the lion down to look at their dog and raccoon.

“Hello there Mr. Dog, how are you?” I pretended to use a weird voice.

The girl let out a loud sigh of annoyance. Her eyes rolled dramatically.

“The lion is a king so he wouldn’t talk to them like that. Haven’t you ever seen The Lion King?” each of her words were sharp and direct despite her age.

Yup. I was definitely not good with kids. I really wanted Lauren to get out of the shower soon, so that I could take one. Actually I think we all were going to try to take one. I hoped there would be enough water for all of us.

“Bow down to your king!” I tried again in a deeper voice.

“Oh hale King Aaron.”

They giggled. Okay I can handle them. This doesn’t seem so bad.

“Down with the king!”

Whoa! Down with the king?! How did we get to this?! Then the two of them dropped their animals and jumped at me. They both attached themselves around my neck knocking me down to the floor in complete surprise. Their laughter echoed through the house as they sat on my chest and stomach.

“Oh you think that is funny do you?”

They just kept on chuckling. They had knocked a seventeen year old male onto the floor. Being gentle, I flipped us over and started to tickle them, a hand on each of their tummies. Their hilarity and their pleas for me to stop rang through the house as they wiggled about. Their smiling faces as they giggled made me forget what had happened to our lives; a moment of escape from reality. That was when I heard someone else laughing.

I looked up at the door to see Lauren. She was out of the shower now and standing in a pink towel looking wet, unlike us covered in dry dirt. Her hair hung loosely, soaking the rim of the towel, but it was still curly. One hand was holding onto the top of the towel and the other hand covering her mouth to not let me see her being so amused.

“Is something funny?” I asked.

I stood up and headed towards her. She still had the giggles and tried to stop them by biting down on her lips. It wasn’t working and I looked into her blue eyes. A new feeling washed over me as I looked at the girl in front of me. I hadn’t ever noticed her in this way; she was actually beautiful. It is easy to miss something when you weren’t looking, even when it was right before you.

“I was just playing with them,” I continued.

“I can see that. I also saw them attack you.”

She was unable to hide her amusement, as her lips were almost to their limits.

“Are you ticklish like your brother?” I blurted out.

Her eyes widen in fear as her giggles stopped short. She held the towel tighter to her body.

“Sean is your sister ticklish?” I asked without my eyes leaving Lauren’s.

Sean got off the floor and walked up to me. Lauren started to shake her head ‘no’ to her brother. He was grinning real big and I could tell the answer already.

“She is very ticklish. She is even more ticklish then I am!”

Oh this was too easy.

“Aaron, don’t you even think about it!” her voice wavered.

I took a step closer with a big smirk on my face then. She took a footstep back and I had the two little ones as my miniature followers. You didn’t have to bond too long with these two to win them over.

“Get the big sis!” roared Sean.

Lauren squeaked as she ran towards the next closest bedroom. Her long legs were showing under the pink towel as she tried to close the door, but the two were in her way. She was not about to be rough with them.

“This isn’t funny anymore!  Can’t you wait ‘til I get clothes on at least?!”

Okay so the situation was a little sick, but very amusing and we all needed a little enjoyment. Any girl should know not to walk around a teenage guy with just a towel on and let him find out she’s ticklish! I ran through the entrance as the two little ones had her cornered to the bed.

“Aaron, stop this!” she yelled, but there was a hint of laughter as she tried to be serious, so she wasn’t thinking of me as a rapist.

The three of us closed in on her as I heard footsteps running towards the room.  I was then standing in front of Lauren so very close to her body.  I placed a hand under her chin as I drowned in her cobalt eyes.  Slowly I drew her lips towards mine and the moment right before our lips touched a noise made us stop and turn to see what it was.

There at the door stood the other three with wide eyes. Mandy started to giggle as Jill was blushing with wide eyes. The stuffed-animal-duo, one looked ready to join Mandy’s reaction as Sean seemed to be ready to make the ‘ew’ facial expression. James, with his fists clenched at his sides, looked angry. The more I thought about it, the more I realized something fast.  James liked Lauren. I grinned at this fast recognition. Then I looked down at the towelled girl not even an inch away from me and couldn’t believe what almost happened.

“What happened?” asked Jill.

“There are fresh towels in the bathroom. Take short showers guys since we don’t know how much water is still working in the pipes. Now, everyone out!  I’m going to get changed since this seems to be a teenage girl’s room, I’ll borrow her clothes, hopefully, and then I’ll give you two a bath in the other bathroom.”

She shooed us all out then locked the door quickly behind me after our eyes briefly met. Jill ran into the bathroom first slamming the door in a hasty fashion.  Mandy waited out next to the door next while James just stood there in the hall glaring at me. Yup, I was definitely right about him liking Lauren. Paige and Sean waited with me outside her door for a few minutes. And finally, the door opened.

She had braided her hair back tight so she could get the hair out of her face. She was now wearing a red tank top that didn’t quiet reach the top of her jeans.  The jeans she was now wearing were ripped up and light blue in color. It was apparent that the girl who once lived here and Lauren were not alike or the same height. She held out her hands and the little ones took them as they left to go to another room. I got up and followed them.

She started the bath for the other two who were wearing their bathing suits under their clothes. Lauren explained they were at a party when everything fell apart so this didn’t surprise me. She sat on the edge of the bathtub as the water raised, and I observed her not understanding my feelings towards about her. I mean, the other day she really bothered me and just being around her was irritating.

“So I’ll shower in here,” I spoke up.

She turned around with her eyes wide.

“What!”

“The line will go faster if we use what we can.  It’s not like you’ll see anything anyway.  The glass is distorted.”

“Are you nuts?!”

“Possibly,” I responded with a smirk.

I have to admit it will be fun making her squirm by making her uncomfortable like this. I walked over to the shower and started the water. She actually turned around with a look of pure shock and disbelief. I just smiled as I reached for the end of my black shirt and pulled it over my head. She was now looking the other way, twisting the knob ending the flow of water for their bath.

“So,” I paused.  “You think wanting to put the clothes through the washer and dyer is pushing anything?” I asked after I got a whiff of what my shirt smelled like.

I blinked a couple of times dropping my shirt onto the floor.

“I don’t think so, right?”

The two little ones in their bathing suits went into the water. They squealed as they splashed each other and I was resentful of them for having each other. Not green with envy enough to be angry with them, just enough that made me wish I had someone with me too.

“Sean, when I said bath, I meant with soap!”

They laughed as I smiled taking off my jeans and leaving them in a pile next to my shirt.  I jumped into the shower and threw the boxers over the top.  Lauren then left the room not looking in my direction and I could tell through the blurred glass as I saw the back of her head.  Then she came back and went back to the bathtub.  I finished up the shower then grabbed the towel after opening one of the sliding doors a little.  After I wrapped the towel around my waist tightly I came out of the shower and stood by the bathtub as Lauren helped Paige wash her hair.  She kept one hand near Paige’s face to prevent the shampoo from going into her eyes.

“We’ll wash everyone’s clothes at once after they are all done.”

She wasn’t looking at me as I stood there in nothing, but a towel. I also wore a half smile.

“Okay.”

She grabbed the two towels next to her as she tried to get them out. I grabbed one of them with the towel as they fought us to stay in the tub.  She then pulled the drain and the water went down which only forced them to get out.

“Come on. Let’s see if the others are done.”

She walked out of the room with Sean behind her, so I put Paige down and they ran ahead of us to the room with toys. Standing against the wall, Mandy and Jill were in towels with their clothes in their arms. James then came out with the towel around his waist. He looked at me, then down at himself and back to me again, conspicuously.  I grinned at him as Lauren started down the stairs.

“Aaron can you keep an eye on Paige and Sean while we are downstairs?”

“Not a problem.”

Hopefully they won’t tackle me again.

I walked into back into the children’s room. Their towels were long forgotten on the floor as they went back to their animals from earlier, this time the two weren’t including me. I sat on the ground the best I could with the towel. I heard loud steps coming up the stairs and saw the girl with the dark skin and short black hair, I still couldn’t figure out which was Mandy and who was Jill.

“The electricity works!”

That was the little detail I forgot about when we talked about washing clothes. The electricity worked? I could have sworn the fridge was off.

“Are you serious?”

“Yeah Lauren put the clothes in, then the detergent, after that she cursed under her breath about not knowing if the electricity even worked, then James started it anyway... and it worked!”

“How is that even possible?”

“I don’t know I just know that’s what happened!”

She ran back down the stairs to the others. I wanted to see if she was telling the truth, but I couldn’t leave the little two for fear of what mother hen Lauren would do to me for leaving them. So I stayed with them. I could feel my blonde hair drying and I wanted clothes right away, I didn’t want to spend much longer in just a towel. I didn’t want to flash the little ones. After a little longer of watching the two little ones, I was hit with something. I took it off my head and saw it was my clothes.  I stood up and passed Lauren in order to get changed.

I went back into the room that was connected to the bathroom where we gave the little ones their bath. It must have been the master bedroom. Quickly I got changed and laid on the bed seeing that the sky was darkening so that there was just the dim red glow. Lauren appeared in the door frame looking weary. Slowly, she made her way over and lay on the bed, curling up into a ball. Her eyes began closing as her head hit the pillow. She was always tired and I never noticed this, which caused my nerves to pick up.

“Are you feeling alright?” I almost didn’t recognize my voice.

“Yeah just a little tired. that’s all.”

I just looked at her trying to figure out if she was lying or not. That was when the two little ones, holding sandwiches, ran into the room and jumped on top of the bed. Lauren smiled as she gazed at them. Quickly they put the last bite of the sandwiches into their mouths then lay between Lauren and I to fall asleep with the stuffed animals tucked safely in their arms. I knew that Lauren was in a deep slumber, so I went to go check on everyone else, deciding she needed the break. The two girls were in the teenager’s room talking to each other as they were giving into the sandman’s demands. James was in the room we hadn’t gone in, which was right next to the one Lauren and I are in.

He just frowned at me then I went back to our room. The second I walked into the room I saw the three of them were no longer awake. Lauren was still on her side curled up into a ball and the two little kids were next to her.  There was just enough room for me in the spot I was in before on the king sized mattress. Slowly, I unmade the bed trying not to wake them and pulled the sheets over them.  I went under the sheets looking at them.  I guess there was a place for me in this new family after all. Slowly, I went to sleep glancing over at them as we were all close together.

A gun shot was heard through the night, killing all the peace that came over all of us for the first time in a little bit. I quickly got up to look out of the window. My eyes tried to adjust to the darkness. I stood by the wall glancing out into the front yard. There were a few people down in what use to be a street with fire torches and up in front, I recognized the first man with the gun. My heart raced as I looked over to the now awake Lauren and the younger two. The little girl was near tears as she clung to Sean who did the same.  Lauren had gotten up swiftly to see for herself what was going on, so she was now standing near me. I turned to Lauren and held her by her shoulders so that our eyes would be locked onto each others. I didn’t know how much time we had.

“Lauren, Mr. Manson’s men are here. Stay calm and listen. I want you to grab the entire group and hide in this house. I’m going to run out through the back to have them after me, but still have some distance from them. I’ll lose them and come back here, but I don’t know how long that will take. I want you to stay here and only move if you have no other choice. If you leave I want you to keep going west so I can find you. Give me a week though, please,” I tried to keep my voice hushed and composed as uneasiness took over my body.

“Alright,” she looked sickly scared as she agreed, knowing neither of us were happy with this plan or believed my stress-free approach to it.

She looked worried, but I needed to get these men away from all of them. My heart pounded, wondering if my rapid plan would even work. I really didn’t know where I would run to, once I left the house.  Would she listen? Could I even get away and not get killed by the men? I still had my hands on her shoulders.  I pulled her into a hard kiss then ran out of the house hoping this would work before either of us could react further. I dashed down the steps, skipping half them. My feet nearly slipped from under me as I raced to the back.  Throwing the door open, slamming the rear door behind me I made as much noise outside hoping they would hear me.

Chapter Three
Lauren
